Careers Wales suggested a Traineeship to help him gain further qualifications and gain work experience which was just the structured support he needed to set him on the right path.
Most of all, he says, his Traineeship at our centre in Merthyr Tydfil helped him overcome the shyness that had always held him back at school.
Now he is about to start a new job at his local youth club after impressing there while working on a placement.
Tom, 20, said: “The Traineeship was just right for me. I didn’t want to stay on at school but this allowed me to keep studying and gaining qualifications, including first aid and health and safety, and gain work experience which has led to a job I love.
“Perhaps most importantly it gave me confidence. At school I would never speak out in front of a group. During my Traineeship we did group work where I had to give presentations and it helped me overcome my shyness.”
On top of all that, industrious Tom spent his Saturdays studying for a qualification in Youth Work.
It all paid off when he was offered a job at the Pant & Dowlais Boys & Girls Club. He said:
“I used to go to the youth club as a child and I looked up to the workers there. Now I hope to be a good role model to the young people coming through.
“I’m also looking forward to my first proper pay packet. I plan to buy some clothes and start saving for a car.”
Joanne Southall, our Local Business Leader in Merthyr Tydfil, said: “Thomas has really demonstrated how successful Traineeships can be in securing a career where employment and higher qualifications can be achieved. Thomas is a model learner that others can look up to.”
"It helps boost our learners’ numeracy and literacy where needed and gives them classroom-based and work-based training plus advice to help them move into employment or onto further or higher education."
